i am learning forms and i was trying to get the lov(list of values like an column from one of the tables in the database) to appear in a listbox at run time. where i can chose the item without having to use the 'display lov' function in the menu. is it possible to do what i am trying or am i just pushing it too far?

Look at the 'Automatic Display' property for LOVs.
